RS/MP Chapter 16: “That We May Become One” (Lorenzo Snow Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on August 16, 2013

For this week’s lesson notes I will provide a few comments/questions section by section. Find the link to this weeks lesson here.

From the Life of Lorenzo Snow

The introduction of this lesson discusses Brigham Young establishing the Perpetual Emigrating Fund in 1849. In 2001, the church established The Perpetual Education Fund, which you can read about here.

Although the people had little to give individually, their unified efforts blessed many lives. The Perpetual Emigrating Fund expanded beyond its original purpose, helping more than just the members of the Church who had been in Nauvoo. It continued for 38 years, helping tens of thousands of converts from many lands gather with their fellow Saints.

In what ways is today’s Perpetual Education Fund like Brigham Young’s Perpetual Emigrating Fund? What do these funds teach us about becoming one with one another? Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Chapter 12: Tithing, a Law for Our Protection and Advancement (Lorenzo Snow Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on June 13, 2013

For this weeks lesson I will be dealing exclusively with the “additional scriptures” listed in the back of the manual. However, before I get to my notes I wanted to quote the following, “Be careful not to end good discussions too soon in an attempt to present all the material you have prepared. Although it is important to cover the material, it is more important to help learners feel the influence of the Spirit, resolve their questions, increase their understanding of the gospel, and deepen their commitment to keep the commandments” (Teaching, No Greater Call, 64). If more teachers would heed this council I believe that we would all (teacher and students) would be the better for it. My hope is always that these notes will not only spur such good discussions during class, but also afterward and into the week.

The Life of Holiness, Romans 2-4 (Transition); Romans 5:1-2 (pp. 182-209)

Posted by kirkcaudle on April 24, 2013

The following notes come from Cheryl McGuire:

After spending 181 pages  (actually160 pages plus the Introduction) Jim gives us a transition from Chapter 1 to Chapter 5, outlining Chapters 2, 3, and 4 much more briefly.

Jim reminds us that the thesis of the letter to the Romans is found in 1:17.  However, I think we should encompass all of verses 16-17. Using Jim’s translation (and which uses the word trust in place of faith) we read:

RS/MP Lesson 8: Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart (Lorenzo Snow Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on April 18, 2013

The link to the full lesson can be found here.

The additional scriptures listed at the end of this lesson include 2 Peter 1:2-11. This section of the Biblical text struck me as important and so my thoughts today will be based upon these verses. This chapter deals with the theme of hoping for eternal life, which fits very well with the sub-heading of this lesson, “Righteous Latter-day Saints strive to ‘establish a character before God that could be relied upon in the hour of trial.'” As you read this commentary ask yourself (and perhaps your class if you are a teacher) “how can each of these verses help me improve my own personal character as a disciple of Jesus Christ?” Read the rest of this entry »

The Life of Holiness, Romans 1:16-17 (pp. 111-138)

Posted by kirkcaudle on April 4, 2013

The section that I will be dealing with in this post is pages 111-138, Romans 1:16-17. The following are Jim’s translation (first) and the KJV translation (second) of these verses:

(16)I am not ashamed of the gospel  for it is God’s power to bring salvation for all those who thrust, both to the Jew first and to the Greek. (17) For God’s justice is revealed in it by means of trust to those who trust, even as it has been written, “And the just will live by trust.”

(16) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (17) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Read the rest of this entry »
