The Master Teacher

Posted by nhilton on February 12, 2007

Jesus As The Master Teacher : As we try to follow our Savior in so many ways, being an effective teacher is one of them. The Gospels offer a unique look into Christ’s teaching methods.

1. Using all scripture, not just the New Testament, how do you see Christ modeling teaching methods? Give examples, please.

2. Have you had success/failure in emulating these methods or is there someone else who has modeled them and thereby taught you?

3. How do you improve your teaching skills, following Christ’s model?

GD NT Lesson #7: Secrecy in the Gospel of Mark

Posted by Robert C. on February 12, 2007

[Feel free to use this post to discuss any topics for Lesson #7 while we wait for SS posts from Jim F., Brian J. or others.]

Mark 1:34 states that Jesus cast out devils and then silenced these devils “because they knew him” (some mss lengthen this: “b/c they knew him to be the Christ“).  This is often taken as support for what seems to be an important theme of secrecy in the gospel of Mark.  Perhaps the most striking occurrence of this theme occurs in Mark 4:11-12 where Jesus explains that he teaches in parables so that his disciples will understand but “those that are without” will not understand.  He explains this by quoting Isaiah 6:9ff: “That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.”

This is a troubling passage b/c it seems that Jesus is being purposely abstruse in order to confuse the “outsiders” (reminds me of accusations made against many Continental philosophers, Derrida esp…).  Why would Jesus be purposely confusing?

A Collision Between Scripture and Doctrine?

Posted by douglashunter on February 11, 2007

I want to relate an experience I had today and get some opinions. During my MP class I attempted to use Gen. 3 when God confronts Adam and Eve in the garden as an example of guilt and the difficulty of speaking about sin. Read the rest of this entry »

Better Late than Never- MP Lesson ch4.

Posted by douglashunter on February 10, 2007

Well, I should have posted this a week ago but it’s been challenging for me to put this together. I decided to make this a more scripture oriented lesson, to tie the themes of the lesson to scripture. I wanted to do this in a way that brought out a different voice, one less oriented to doctrine but more oriented to scripture that articulates the emotional story of repentence and forgiveness. I found that I relied on the OT a great deal and made a personal discovery in some wonderful passages of Jeremiah. Anyway here is it. I’m interested to know if people think this is a good way to tie scripture into RS / MP lessons that are not scripture based. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by BrianJ on February 10, 2007

JimF has excellent notes on Chapter 4 and Robert C started an interesting discussion on verse 4:23.

Luke 5
v. 1-7: What does Jesus teach Peter, James, and John with this miracle?

v. 8: Why does Peter respond this way? Why does Luke tell us about Peter’s response? Read the rest of this entry »

Worldwide Leadership Training Broadcast: The Gift of Teaching

Posted by BrianJ on February 10, 2007

Here are some of my notes from the worldwide training broadcast (on 10 Feb 2007). This isn’t meant to be a complete summary—just things I found interesting.

The meeting was titled, “The Gift of Teaching.” I wondered how this gift would be discussed: i.e. would we hear that we are gifted as teachers or about how to receive the gift?

GD NT Lesson #6: Teaching Ideas

Posted by Robert C. on February 9, 2007

I expect and hope that Jim will post his Lesson 6 study questions soon.  Until then, this post can work as a place to add comments, questions, and suggestions for this lesson.  However, I’d primarily like to address Matt W.’s recent request for ideas on how to teach this lesson to his unruly teenagers.  Here’s my suggestion, which I think would serve as a good follow-up to the “Why are people so retarded” discussion:
