RS/MP Lesson 4: “The Prophet Joseph Smith, God’s Instrument in Restoring the Truth” (George Albert Smith Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on February 10, 2012

For this weeks lesson I will use the scriptures in order to tackle some of the questions provided directly from the lesson manual. As always, I would suggest that you read the actual lesson, which can be found here.   Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 3: “Our Testimony of Jesus Christ” (George Albert Smith Manual)

Posted by Robert C. on February 4, 2012

For this week’s lesson, I’m going to focus on the section titled “Each of us can gain a personal testimony that Jesus is the Christ,” and the scripture John 7:17 (“If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine”).

“Personal Revelation and Testimony,” Sister Barbara Thompson, Oct. 2011 (RS/MP 4th Sunday)

Posted by jennywebb on January 31, 2012

Disclaimer: The following is not intended as a complete study of this conference talk; rather it represents my notes taken during my study of the talk as if I were preparing to teach it. What follows contains what I think are interesting points for discussion in a Relief Society or Priesthood lesson.

Sister Thompson has a directness about her that I appreciate, especially with a topic as subjective as personal revelation and testimony. Read the rest of this entry »

“Waiting upon the Lord: Thy Will Be Done,” Elder Robert D. Hales, Oct. 2011 (RS/MP 4th Sunday)

Posted by jennywebb on January 10, 2012

Disclaimer: The following is not intended as a complete study of this conference talk; rather it represents my notes taken during my study of the talk as if I were preparing to teach it. That is, what follows contains what I think are interesting points for discussion in a Relief Society or priesthood lesson.

At first glance, Elder Hales’s talk here seems to be concerned with the Big Questions: Why am I here? Why am I suffering? And while Elder Hales certainly addresses these issues, the answers are not necessarily new or unexpected.

“As we ask these questions, we realize that the purpose of our life on earth is to grow, develop, and be strengthened through our own experiences.”

But Elder Hales takes his talk in an interesting direction with what follows:

“How do we do this? The scriptures give us an answer in one simple phrase: we ‘wait upon the Lord.’”

The underlying question around which the rest of the talk hangs is what it means to wait upon the Lord. And it is certainly a question worth asking. Read the rest of this entry »

Something new: fourth-Sunday lessons

Posted by jennywebb on January 10, 2012

I know that I have not been an active participant on this blog (other than reading) for quite some time. However, I am hoping to change that somewhat this year. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 2: ““Love Thy Neighbour as Thyself”” (George Albert Smith Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on January 6, 2012

The manual starts out with this, “George Albert Smith was well known for his capacity to love others. President J. Reuben Clark Jr., one of his counselors in the First Presidency, said of him: ‘His real name was Love. … He gave his love to everyone he met. He gave his love to all whom he did not meet.’”

Reading this made me think about what it means to love someone. Often young people will ask, “how will I know if I love someone enough to marry them?” This, of course, is a fair question. However, I do not think that the question needs to be confined to marriage. Perhaps we can ask, “how do I know if I love people in general?” And further, “how can I tell if my peers (ward, co-workers, friends, etc.) love me?” The easy answer to these questions is based upon actions. RS/MP Lesson 1: “Living What We Believe” (George Albert Smith Manual)

Posted by Robert C. on January 2, 2012

The theme and quotes in this lesson follow, I think, fairly expectedly from the title of the lesson. Time is short for me, so I’m going to focus on some issues relating to John 8, how it is used in this lesson, and what I think are some ways this passage gives us for thinking about the lesson as a whole in fresh ways that can generate interesting discussion. (If anyone else is interested in posting lesson notes, since time will likely be somewhat short for me for the next several months, please say so below, or email me at rcouchZZZ@gmail.com, without the ZZZ. Of course, making interesting comments is a very easy and non-committal way to help enhance the value of these notes!) Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 47: “Exaltation” (Gospel Principles Manual)

Posted by joespencer on December 3, 2011

Here we are finally, the last Gospel Principles lesson. And the topic, naturally, is exaltation, a fitting end to things. I’ve decided that, for these notes, I’ll offer just a reading of D&C 76:50-70, beside a quick note on one part of the lesson material. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 12: “The Atonement” (Gospel Principles Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on November 24, 2011

I am teaching this lesson on Sunday and noticed that, as of yet,  nobody has posted notes. I thought I would post mine in case any one else is teaching. The manual has some potentially great discussion questions within this lesson. I will use mostly the questions from the manual and throw in one of my own as a follow-up every now and again.

The Atonement is something that is hard for me to teach (because I really do not understand it) and a subject that I approach with the utmost reverence (because of its eternal and sacred nature). Because of the length of this lesson I have only posted notes for the first three sections. I have also consciously left out the historical atonement theories. I welcome them for discussion; I simply thought that they would complicate the matter for those who are just browsing the blog and are unfamiliar with them. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 46: “The Final Judgment” (Gospel Principles Manual)

Posted by kirkcaudle on November 12, 2011

As always, I try to hit each section briefly and offer some food for thought through the scriptures quoted. I also give questions for each section. My hope is that these questions make you come up with questions of your own. My questions, and commentary, are mostly rhetorical to help guide your own thoughts on the subject.

Judgments of God

Our lives are not made up of one single judgment. Rather, our lives are made up of a series of judgments. We are judged in almost everything that we do. This is especially true in the church when it comes to worthiness (baptism, temple, priesthood, etc.). It is also true in other walks of life (work, sports, etc.) However, it is not if we are judged, but how we are judged that is important. The following two scriptures will say how we are judged.
