What Is the Doctrine and Covenants? Part II.3, The Book of Commandments

Posted by joespencer on August 28, 2010

In my post on the printing of the revelations in the Evening and Morning Star, I have already outlined some of the basic history behind the Church’s development of its first efforts at putting Joseph’s revelations in print. The turn toward printing, it seems, worked itself out through a series of events: the unauthorized publication of section 42 in non-Mormon newspapers seems first to have precipitated the desire; the conversion of W. W. Phelps, already a professional printer, seems to have made for the actual possibility of printing the revelations; and the organization of the Literary Firm during the November 1831 conference in Kirtland seems to have sealed the deal. In that previous post, I avoided, for the most part, dealing with the plans to produce the Book of Commandments, focusing instead on the printing of the revelations in the Star, both because the Star was issued earlier than the Book of Commandments and because the Star commanded a much, much larger readership than the Book of Commandments ever did. Here I want to begin by returning to this early history but now with a focus on the Book of Commandments. After that, I will turn to the actual volume that is the Book of Commandments, along with the manuscript collections that tell us something about the production of the Book of Commandments. Finally, I will look at efforts at history-writing that were undertaken alongside the publication of the Book of Commandments. I will postpone discussion of the aftermath of the publication of the Book of Commandments until my next post, where I will deal with the publication of the Doctrine and Covenants in 1835. Sunday School Lesson 33: Jonah 1-4: Micah 2, 4-7

Posted by Jim F. on August 26, 2010

This is another long set of study notes. I have adapted parts of them from a set of notes that Arthur Bassett made several years ago—but don’t hold Art responsible for any mistakes you see here. They are probably mine. I will provide study notes for both sets of readings, that from Jonah and that from Micah, but I will concentrate my notes on the book of Jonah. Read the rest of this entry »

Is careful scripture study merely academic?

Posted by Robert C. on August 24, 2010

In a recent post, BrianJ responded to Jim F. somewhat self-disparagingly by saying, essentially, that his post was merely academic (for a good discussion of the self-betrayal involved with self-disparagement, see part 17 of Terry Warner’s Bonds That Make Us Free, which I just recently read….).

This has me wondering about topics we discussed a fair bit during the first few months after we started this blog—topics I’d like to revisit. Here’s what I think is the most common approach to scriptures among Mormons: we read scripture in an applied but reductive manner. We read the stories mainly to get to the moral of the story, with an eye toward uncovering the universal truths that the scriptures teach (usually in a fairly plain manner, except for Isaiah, as even Nephi admits…). Then, we spend most our energy pondering or discussing the ways in which these principles might be applied to our lives. We care little for the academic interesting in careful reading, nuanced historical or structural analysis, theological conceptualization, etc.

My question is whether anything beyond this kind of an approach is looking beyond the mark, and merely academic. Read the rest of this entry »

Why the Organization of the Priesthood Will Never Make Sense

Posted by BrianJ on August 20, 2010

Year after year, we have lessons on one of the most static and impersonal of topics: the Organization of the Priesthood. Now, I don’t mean the act of organizing the priesthood—that was a dynamic, exciting process with lots of stones left to look under, and along the way we read inspiring accounts of personal sacrifice, delve into important doctrine, and so forth. No, I’m talking about lessons on the way in which the priesthood is organized today: its structure, offices, hierarchies, and protocols.

Should be an easy once-in-a-lifetime lesson, right? I mean, it should be no more complicated than discussing the political/geographical organization of a nation: neighborhood, city, county, state, region, country, continent, hemisphere—and my six-year old can tell you that! So why is it necessary to discuss every year? Is it really so hard for members to understand and remember the details of priesthood organization? Yes, yes it is! Read the rest of this entry »

RS / MP Lesson 16: “The Church of Jesus Christ in Former Times”

Posted by Jim F. on August 12, 2010

NOTE: As with all the materials I post, I am more inclined to offer questions for thought than to give what some might think are the answers to questions. The scriptures are equally available to us all, so anyone who is literate and has time to ponder and pray is entitled to answers from the Holy Spirit. Often, however, I’m not sure there is any one answer to the questions that the Gospel raises. Read the rest of this entry »

What Is the Doctrine and Covenants? Part II.2, Joseph Smith’s Revelations in 1832

Posted by joespencer on August 8, 2010

The Church saw the seeds of a major development in its notion of canonicity planted in June of 1831 when William W. Phelps joined the fledgling movement. Read the rest of this entry »
