You Have a Choice

Posted by BrianJ on May 30, 2010

(This is an epilogue to two previous posts: When Abraham Knew and What if Abraham Failed the Test?)
It’s possible to conceive of a different version of the story of Abraham sacrificing Isaac, one where Abraham makes a different decision (and we learn a different lesson):

Instead of obeying, Abraham refuses on the grounds that killing the innocent is unjust. Read the rest of this entry »

What if Abraham Failed the Test?

Posted by BrianJ on May 30, 2010

To be clear, I’m not contemplating, “What if Abraham had failed the test,” as though this post is an exploration of what might have been. No, I want to think about whether or not Abraham actually failed his test. Read the rest of this entry »

Old Testament Lesson 21 Study Notes: 1 Samuel 2-3; 8

Posted by Jim F. on May 29, 2010

One can reasonably argue that the book of Judges shows us the decline of Israel to a situation in which they have to have a king to lead them, and that the treatment of women that we see in Judges is a sign of that decline. One can also argue that Ruth is a response to that theme in Judges. How does the story of Hannah fit into that theme? Read the rest of this entry »

How a loving God could command the wholesale extermination of nations

Posted by Matthew on May 26, 2010

I took my title from Cheryl’s post on Joshua. And there is a similar question in my father’s post here. If you haven’t already, you may want to take a look at those posts and comments.

Here is a longer way of expressing the conflict present in the title of this post:

(1) God is good (something we can assert by definition or, more importantly, we can testify of through our experience with him). Read the rest of this entry »

When Abraham Knew

Posted by BrianJ on May 23, 2010

What motivated Moses to kill the Egyptian? What did Mormon hope to accomplish when he re-accepted his role as general? What did Ruth believe was at stake when she followed her mother-in-law?

The answers to questions like these influence how we interpret scripture. Knowing how the people reached their decisions instructs us on how to apply (or avoid!) their same reasoning to our own situations. It affects what we view as the “moral of the story.” In some cases, it dramatically impacts the theology. Much of the answer rests on knowing what the people knew at the time their decisions were made and not what they learned afterwards. Read the rest of this entry »

OT Lesson 20 Study Notes: Ruth; 1 Samuel 1

Posted by Jim F. on May 17, 2010

The story of Ruth occurs “in the days when the judges ruled” (Ruth 1:1). It is not, strictly speaking, in chronological order. Indeed, from here on out, you may wish to consult the Old Testament chronology in the Bible Dictionary if you wish to see the historical connectedness of the various stories. Joseph Smith and Abou Ben Adhem

Posted by robf on May 7, 2010

Not sure how I’ve never heard this poem before, but today I was struck by the similarity between Joseph Smith’s encounter with Moroni and James Henry Leigh Hunt’s poem Abou Ben Adhem (published in England in 1834): Read the rest of this entry »

Finally: An Outline of a Book of Mormon Remnant Theology

Posted by joespencer on May 7, 2010

In a long series of posts, I have worked through every passage in the Book of Mormon—as well as a number of the obvious predecessors in the Old Testament—employing the word “remnant.” What I would like to do now, finally, in a last post is to begin to formulate, on the grounds of all this work, an actual remnant theology in light of the Book of Mormon. I hope this is a satisfactory conclusion to all this work. Read the rest of this entry »
