Happy One-Hundredth to Hugh Nibley: A Story, Some Reflections, and a Book Review

Posted by joespencer on March 27, 2010

Today marks what would have been Hugh Nibley’s hundredth birthday. I thought it fitting to offer something of a tribute to him here, particularly because of all he did—and continues to do—for Mormon scripture study. What follows, as the title of the post makes clear, is (1) the story of my own entanglement with Nibley; (2) a few reflections on what I hope will continue to be Nibley’s influence in Mormon studies; and (3) a review of Nibley’s just recently released magnum opus, One Eternal Round. I offer the story in order to encourage others to tell their Nibley stories; I offer my reflections in order to generate some discussion of Nibley’s contribution to Mormon studies; and I offer the review for those interested in the book. Happy birthday, Brother Nibley! Read the rest of this entry »

The Remnant in the Book of Mormon: 3 Nephi 20-21, Preliminaries

Posted by joespencer on March 24, 2010

In a series of posts (see here and here and here and here and here and here), I have worked through the basic contours of the remnant theology in the Book of Mormon—mostly in order to sketch out some of the basics, but with increasing brevity as I’ve approached the end of the book. In my discussion of Third Nephi, I skipped over 3 Nephi 20-21 completely, primarily because these two chapters constitute the most privileged—and complex!—discussion of the remnant in the Book of Mormon, and I thought it best to dedicate a more sustained and careful analysis to that text in particular. So here we are: the last word I’ll be putting together for now on the remnant. What of 3 Nephi 20-21? Read the rest of this entry »

Before looking in detail at the scriptures for this week, consider the following possible chiastic parallels between the story of Moses’s life and the story of Israel’s experience. Read the rest of this entry »

OT Lesson 12 Study Notes: Genesis 40-45

Genesis 40

Verse 1: How long do you think “after these things” might represent, a long time or a short time? Why do you think we hear nothing further about Potiphar’s wife and what became of her? Read the rest of this entry »

The Remnant in the Book of Mormon: Mormon and Moroni

Posted by joespencer on March 16, 2010

In a series of posts so far, I’ve discussed the role of the remnant in the Book of Mormon, first in an anticipatory way, then, in succession, in terms of Isaiah, Nephi’s writings, the historical books of Mosiah, Alma, and Helaman, and, most recently, Third Nephi’s visit of Christ. In this last post, I left out any detailed discussion of 3 Nephi 20-21, a two-chapter discourse which is clearly the crux of Book of Mormon remnant theology. My intention here is to work through the discussions of the remnant to be found in Mormon’s and Moroni’s final contributions to the Book of Mormon before returning, in a separate post (or in several separate posts), to a (very) detailed analysis of 3 Nephi 20-21. The contributions of Mormon and Moroni, it turns out, are quite significant. Read the rest of this entry »

The Remnant in the Book of Mormon: The Visit of Christ

Posted by joespencer on March 14, 2010

My previous posts on the remnant theme in the Book of Mormon have showed that after an initial period of development—the original theme being drawn in part from Isaiah and in part from Nephi’s visions—the theme seems to have gone more or less unrecognized by the Nephites for hundreds of years. What seems to have reintroduced the theme of the remnant of Israel was the visit of Christ, to which I will turn in this post. Like First Nephi and Second Nephi, Third Nephi is simply saturated with the remnant theme, and it is wonderfully complicated in a number of ways in that book. The principal figure, in Third Nephi, who opens up new possibilities with the theme is, of course, Christ Himself. So it is to Him primarily that this post will look. That said, though, there are a few mentions of the remnant that precede His actual visit, and so I’ll begin with those. Read the rest of this entry »

RS / MP Lesson 5: “The Creation” (Gospel Principles Manual) –JF

Posted by Jim F. on March 7, 2010

Robert C and I both decided to post on this lesson. We take very different approaches to it, so I don’t think having both up is a problem.

RS/MP Lesson 5: “Creation” (Gospel Principles Manual) — RC

Posted by Robert C. on March 7, 2010

This lesson is on creation. Creation forms an important part of the temple endowment, and we have been given two alternative accounts in the books of Moses and Abraham. Despite this emphasis, or perhaps because of it, I feel like creation is one of the doctrines in the Church that I understand the least. Read the rest of this entry »
