We didn’t have a lot of time for this lesson this week, so we focused on Eliza R. Snow’s comments, and on Joseph having integrity and being firm in what he was sent to accomplish. We made the lesson much more about us than about Joseph Smith, likening it unto ourselves, and talking about what it means to have integrity and how its presence or absence makes our lives and relationships work or not.

Joe, you give Emmeline Wells’s exclamation about Joseph’s presence more credit than I would. I don’t think its refusal to represent Joesph undoes its implicit comparison of Joseph Smith to God, so I think it is not a statement that we should continue to repeat. I’m sure that Wells merely got carried away in nostalgia and said this, but her nostalgia lends itself too easily to hero worship or worse.

Wonderful insights on this lesson! Thank you for writing this. Sometimes it is hard to get past the expressions of enthusiasm others made about him to get at the spiritual truth behind it so that we can understand how it can help us, since we haven’t met Joseph Smith personally.
