RS/MP Lesson 34: “The Power of Forgiving” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on April 21, 2009

This lesson is heavily anecdotal: most of it could have come under the “From the Life of Joseph Smith” section (though most of it, of course, does not). It climaxes with the beautiful story of William W. Phelps’s repentance and return to fellowship, the last lines of which make up the italicized introductory snippet for the lesson on page 391.

Given all the above, my notes this week will be a bit different from what they usually are. My usual form of analysis will be employed in dealing with the teachings primarily on pages 393-394. For the remainder, I will provide just a bit of contextualization. Read the rest of this entry »

Mormons and Theology

Posted by douglashunter on April 19, 2009

Something that my reading and writing of the past few months has gotten me thinking about are the distinctions between various types of thought and work that occur within the religious realm.  I am wonder about the distinction between theology and ideology, between theology and philosophy, and between theology and doctrine. These area very different questions so I’ll focus on the last one.   Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 33: “The Spiritual Gifts of Healing, Tongues, Prophecy, and Discerning of Spirits” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on April 19, 2009

The “From the Life of Joseph Smith” portion of this lesson recounts the story of Joseph Smith’s healing the sick and dying Saints along the Mississippi river after his arrival in Nauvoo. It nicely illustrates the power of the gifts of the Spirit.

The remainder of the lesson, however, is a bit more theoretical, one might say. That is, the “Teachings of Joseph Smith” portion of the lesson does not recount narratives of healing, speaking in tongues, prophecy, and discernment—but rather offers Joseph’s teachings about the nature, place, and employment of these gifts.

What I found particularly interesting in my own study of this lesson is the way these teachings, grouped and separated out as they are, allow for a thinking of the uniqueness of each gift of the Spirit covered here. My notes dwell primarily on that point: What is unique or distinct about each of the four gifts discussed, and what does that tell us about the role or purpose of the several gifts? Atonement Perspective: Overcoming or Escaping?

Posted by BrianJ on April 18, 2009

Short thought question:

We point to two types of suffering Jesus experienced as part of the Atonement: 1) that due to our sins and 2) all the other kind (physical pain, sorrows, etc.). Read the rest of this entry »

Easter at Mars

Posted by BrianJ on April 14, 2009

…Hill, that is. Mars Hill Church in Seattle, WA.

Over a year ago I read a comment on a blog by Kevin Barney* where he mentioned an Easter tradition he enjoys: attending the Easter services of another Christian denomination. Since Kevin Barney is totally cool and since the idea seemed like a good one, I decided to make it my tradition as well. This is my second year of the tradition and I took the whole family to Mars Hill Church.

LDS Truth Absorption Latency

Posted by BrianJ on April 13, 2009

Yesterday at church someone said, “We have all the truth in the world right here in the LDS Church.” You and I have probably heard this kind of statement dozens of times. Part of the reason Mormons make such a bold claim is that we are anxious to accept anything that is true regardless of its source.

Sunday School Doctrine and Covenants Lesson 15: “Seek Ye Earnestly the Best Gifts” (D&C 46)

RS/MP Lesson 32: “Responding to Persecution with Faith and Courage” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on April 6, 2009

This is a remarkably short lesson (the “Teachings” section is only five pages long and includes a picture!), so I have relatively little to say about it. More than anything, I want to pick out what seems to me to be the most persistent theme running through it. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 31: “‘God Shall Be with You Forever and Ever’: The Prophet in Liberty Jail” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on April 5, 2009

Most of this lesson is drawn from the supernal Liberty Jail letter Joseph Smith in his suffering wrote to the Saints in their suffering. Parts of it have been carried over from the original letter to sections 121, 122, and 123 of the Doctrine and Covenants, and other snippets and paragraphs of it have come to be among Joseph’s most famous statements. It can be found in its entirety in History of the Church 3:289-305, or, unedited, in Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, pp. 389-407. I highly recommend that it be read in its entirety—especially by those who will teach it in Relief Society or Melchizedek Priesthood. Read the rest of this entry »
