A Mighty Nation Among the Gentiles

Posted by robf on January 29, 2009

After reading to his brothers from the words of Isaiah, Nephi prophesies about “a mighty nation among the Gentiles” (1 Nephi 22:7) that will scatter their descendants. I think many of us traditionally interpret this “mighty nation” as the United States of America. Maybe we’ve been wrong. Read the rest of this entry »

Aaronic Priesthood Lesson 4: Gathering Fast Offerings

Posted by NathanG on January 27, 2009

I am now teaching Aaronic Priesthood lessons, kind of.  For the time being I teach the deacons, but we haven’t had any deacons present for a few weeks.  I was looking at this lesson and wasn’t sure how I would teach it, and then I wasn’t sure I understood the doctrine very well.  Here’s some questions that hopefully someone has some thoughts on.

D&C Lesson 5

Posted by cherylem on January 27, 2009

I apologize for not posting notes for last week’s lesson. I didn’t have a lot of time last week; if I can I will eventually post something on Lesson 4.

Here are Jim F’s notes on this lesson. They are excellent: http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2005/01/sunday-school-lesson-5/

And here, again, are Mack Stirling’s institute notes for D&C 6, 8,  and 9. I’ve interspersed some information from Lyndon Cook’s book on the D&C. I may post more later, but hopefully this will prove useful.

RS/MP Lesson 27: “Beware the Bitter Fruits of Apostasy” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on January 25, 2009

In my notes on lessons 26 (see here), I briefly discussed the apparent shock Joseph experienced when Elijah came to the Kirtland Temple: the Prophet seems to have believed at first that his revelatory work was complete with the dedication of the temple, and so he was taken by surprise by the sudden announcement that there was actually a great deal more to do. A bit of further clarification about this surprise should lay a good foundation for this lesson. Read the rest of this entry »

RS /MP 25 truths from the Savior’s Parables in Matthew 13

Posted by douglashunter on January 16, 2009

A short, poorly written, pop quiz for the sake of poking fun at seeds and signifiers. . .1980′s style, naturally. Read the rest of this entry »

D&C Lesson 3, part 3

Posted by cherylem on January 15, 2009

And here I post the last of Mack Stirling’s Institute notes on JSH1:1-26, The FIRST VISION

I know these notes are tough to get through, and the format doesn’t always copy very well, but I promise that working through them is a worthy use of your time.

RS/MP Lesson 26: “Elijah and the Restoration of the Sealing Keys” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on January 13, 2009

[My apologies in advance for the somewhat scattered status of these notes. This topic turned out to be far more difficult to summarize than I anticipated. Three hours over three days left me little time to sort things out further, so they will have to remain as they are now. Feel quite free to ask questions for clarification.] The introductory portion of this lesson tells in brief about the events surrounding the dedication of the Kirtland temple, culminating, of course, in the visit of Elijah to Joseph and Oliver a week after the dedication. This event is, in some ways, the most important of the whole series making up the Restoration. And yet—ironically, as I hope to show—it was entirely unanticipated. In order to make quite clear how unanticipated it was, let me quote from Richard Bushman’s Rough Stone Rolling (pp. 320-321): Read the rest of this entry »

Personal Revelation and the Scriptures

Posted by Matthew on January 11, 2009

It is fairly widely argued that, as a people, we should spend more time studying the scriptures. That’s a big part of the motivation behind this blog and it’s sister wiki. We all know of the condemnation spoken of in D&C 84:58 and made famous by President Benson.

Naturally, much of what goes on here on the blog, at the wiki, and in Sunday School classes, is–on a good day:)–to look closely at what the scriptures say and listen to what authorities say about them. That’s wonderful but study alone, without personal revelation, doesn’t amount to much.

Consider Nephi’s reaction to hearing his father’s vision…was it to carefully parse his father’s words, ask questions about them and debate with others the meaning? No. We know that’s much more similar to his elder brother’s reaction. (See 1 Ne 15:1-11.) Nephi’s reaction was to seek revelation (1 Ne 11:1). Which he then received. Read the rest of this entry »
