There are, in essence, two parts to this lesson. First, it serves as an introduction to the course, which is, in fundamental ways, quite different from the other Sunday School courses (Book of Mormon, Old Testament, and New Testament). Second, it covers the first section of the Doctrine and Covenants. My own notes and observations below will accordingly be broken up into two parts. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 24: “Leading in the Lord’s Way” (Joseph Smith Manual)
Posted by joespencer on December 10, 2008
The introductory section to this lesson deals with Zion’s Camp, an event that is, I believe, more or less familiar to most Latter-day Saints. I will leave the introductory section off, then, and turn directly to the teachings sections. The last section of the teachings portion of the lesson, it should be noted, is also dedicated entirely to the theme of Zion’s camp. For whatever unjustifiable personal preferences, I’ll ignore that section as well in my comments and notes this time: I think the Zion’s Camp episode is straightforward enough on its own. On, then, to Joseph’s other teachings about what leadership is. Read the rest of this entry »

Brother of Jared: Missing Names and Mis-named Lands
Posted by BrianJ on December 9, 2008
I noticed something interesting about “the brother of Jared” story during Sunday School. Just a few verses after he is blessed for crying to the Lord (Ether 1:43), the brother of Jared is chastised for three hours for not calling on the Lord. This has raised several questions about his prayers: were they less intense, sincere, or frequent, or did he forget to express gratitude, or not ask for enough? Along with all these questions is that one nagging question: Why didn’t Ether/Moroni ever write down the guy’s name?

RS/MP Lesson 23: “How Good and How Pleasant It Is . . . to Dwell Together in Unity” (Joseph Smith Manual)
Posted by joespencer on December 5, 2008
The event from Joseph’s life that draws out this lesson is the reception of the revealed commandment to build the Kirtland House of the Lord (the Kirtland Temple). I find this fascinating: unity, for Joseph or even in Mormonism generally, cannot be separated from temple-building. It is a point that is made in the introductory section on p. 273: “The Prophet declared: ‘Great preparations were making to commence a house of the Lord; and notwithstanding the Church was poor, yet our unity, harmony and charity abounded to strengthen us to do the commandments of God.’”
I want to tease out this relationship in some detail: What is behind this apparently essential tie between the unity of the saints and the building of temples? Read the rest of this entry »

Book of Mormon Sunday School Lesson 46: “By Faith All Things Are Fulfilled” (Ether 7-15)
Posted by NathanG on December 3, 2008
Here is the link to Jim F’s notes, which focuses on Ether chapter 12 and the discussion on faith.
The lesson covers many generations of history which is a continual cycle of wickedness, secret combinations, destruction, and righteousness. Read the rest of this entry »
