Liberty in Alma?

Posted by douglashunter on August 25, 2008

In reading Alma and in listening to the lessons on Alma the past few weeks.  I am struck by how the notion of liberty is used throughout the text.  It seems to me that the concept is present in the text in a fully modern sense. This would be in the sense that it was present in a young post revolutionary America and as found in the writing of John Stuart Mill.  This really jumps off the page for me every time I read the sections of Alma that give captain Moroni’s reasons for going to war, in that he gives his reasons directly in terms of liberty as such.  Am I alone in thinking that this is curious or begs to be investigated? Book of Mormon Lesson 31 (Alma 43-52)

Posted by NathanG on August 24, 2008

I will be absent from primary to substitute for Gospel Doctrine today.  I have no real sense of what the gosepl doctrine class is like in my ward since I have been in primary since moving here.  As such, I have no real lessson plan, but here are my notes.

Alma 43-52

10 chapters, 30 pages.  Eight years.  About 30 minutes to teach.

Thinking about Alma…

Posted by joespencer on August 18, 2008

Though some important arguments have been made against the idea, it has become something of a commonplace to understand Paul as the inventor of Christianity. Could something much the same be said of Alma the Younger in the Book of Mormon, that is, that he is something like the inventor of Nephite Christianity? Read the rest of this entry »

A Conference on Alma 32 at BYU

Posted by joespencer on August 11, 2008

For anyone who can make it to Provo in September, there is going to be a conference featuring three of our regular bloggers (Jim F., RobertC, and Joe Spencer). Everyone is invited, of course, to come, and we’d love to see notices of the conference spread around the bloggernacle a bit (so feel free to post the info on your own blog, etc.):

RS/MP Lesson 16: “Revelation and the Living Prophet” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on August 10, 2008

A number of historical facts open this lesson, collectively painting up a picture of how much access the saints had to the revelations of the Prophet up until the publication of the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants in 1835. I think they more or less stand, though, without comment, so I will turn to the actual teachings of the lesson. Read the rest of this entry »

Faith, Hope, and Charity

Posted by joespencer on August 9, 2008

While traveling during the past week, I recorded a series of six one-hour-long podcasts on faith, hope, and charity, during which I learned a great deal. I thought they might be of interest to some readers of this site, so I thought I’d make mention of them. I’ve begun posting them at teachyediligently (as of posting, I have only one up there, but I will post links to the individual podcasts in the comments as I get them up).

Enjoy!

EQ / RS Lesson 15: Establishing the Cause of Zion

Posted by douglashunter on August 4, 2008

I apologize in advance for the poor condition of these notes. I am posting them anyway because for the first time in months I actually have some lesson planning done before Saturday night!

I see this lesson as quite naturally lending itself to discussions of several areas:

1- The historical context of 19th century America.

2- Some possible differences between how we understand geography today and how early Saints may have thought of it.

3- The promises and risks to community that come with the concept of Zion.

4- The literal and figurative concepts of Zion and the different implications of each for our faith and action.

Book of Mormon Lesson 29 (Alma 36-39)

Posted by robf on August 3, 2008

I ended up subbing at the last minute on this one. I had read the first couple chapters this week (and worked on them on the FUTW wiki), so yesterday and today I re-read those chapters and read the last two. I had a couple verses I was interested in talking about, but otherwise didn’t have a plan. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 15: “Establishing the Cause of Zion” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on August 2, 2008

I’m not going to lie: this lesson disappointed me a bit. Or perhaps I should say that the title misled me a bit: whereas I expected a gathering of Joseph’s teachings about the relationship between Jackson County, Missouri and the law of consecration, the chapter is primarily a collection of teachings about (1) the unchanging geographical identity of Zion and (2) the threat of losing an inheritance in that geographically identified Zion.

These are, of course, incredibly important themes, and I’m quite happy to dedicate my notes to them. I suppose I just expected something different. As things are, then, I will work out my notes below according to the two themes I have already identified: (1) geographical identity and (2) self-disinheritance. Read the rest of this entry »
