The Alma Syndrome

Posted by NathanG on July 17, 2008

I grew up listening to my uncles and father sing “Oh That I Were an Angel” and grew to love that verse at the beginning of Alma 29.  I was disappointed when I finally read beyond the first two verses (the text of the song) and came to verse 3 “But behold, I am a man, and do sin in my wish; for I ought to be content with the things which the Lord hath allotted unto me. ” Read the rest of this entry »

A lone man on the Wiki

Posted by robf on July 17, 2008

It’s been pretty lonely over on the Feast Upon the Word wiki lately, but my sojourn there the past month or so has really helped me appreciate the value of the wiki as a scripture study tool. Read the rest of this entry »

RS/MP Lesson 14: “Words of Hope and Consolation at the Time of Death” (Joseph Smith Manual)

Posted by joespencer on July 14, 2008

I found this lesson at once deeply satisfying and oddly frustrating. To a great extent, this is because its title and general subject matter suggested to me that it would serve a particular purpose for me personally, but it failed for the most part to do so. As such, I focused (and will focus here) on the one stretch of the lesson that escaped that “most part”: the teachings of pages 174-176. I’ll provide a few thoughts on the remainder of the lesson quite briefly at the beginning here, essentially to get those parts out of the way. Read the rest of this entry »

YW Lesson 20 (Manual 3): Understanding a Missionary’s Responsibilities (p. 72)

Posted by joespencer on July 12, 2008

[My wife wrote up some notes for the YW lesson she'll be teaching this week, and she is probably planning on having me post these every other week or so for whosever benefit. - Joe]

Hello! I am learning more and more deeply that there is no one right “plan” for a lesson (no more than the one-and-only person to marry!) But here is one idea for any of you who may be teaching this YW lesson.

Preparatory redemption

Posted by cherylem on July 6, 2008

Alma 13:3 reads:

3 And this is the manner after which they were ordained—being acalled and bprepared from the cfoundation of the world according to the dforeknowledge of God, on account of their exceeding faith and good works; in the first place being left to echoose good or evil; therefore they having chosen good, and exercising exceedingly great ffaith, are gcalledwith a holy calling, yea, with that holy calling which was prepared with, and according to, a preparatory redemption for such.

What is preparatory redemption? James Duke addresses this in his article The Literary Structure and Doctrinal Significance of Alma 13:1–9,

here: http://farms.byu.edu/display.php?id=114&table=jbms

I think, from skimming the article, that Duke explains preparatory redemption as “prior redemption,” that is, prior to the actual coming of Christ. The atonement had effect before it took place.

any comments on this?

Gabriel’s Revelation

Posted by cherylem on July 6, 2008

I was wondering what some of you thought about this piece which has appeared in various outlets this morning: “Tablet ignites debate on messiah and resurrection.” My specific question is how this article/discovery/controversy is impacted by certain book of Mormon scriptures, or if there is any intersect at all.
