[Jenny W. compiled the notes below on Jacob 1-7. Other links and resources for Lesson 13 can be found at the Feast wiki here. If anyone else is willing to share their notes with the larger Feast community, please email us at feastblog999@gmail.com (without the 999's), and we'll be happy to post your notes. Be forewarned, however, that if you send us your notes, we will likely start harassing you to keep sending us more notes and/or begin pressuring you to become one of our permabloggers! Thanks, Jenny, for these notes.]

When I was in the MTC almost 20 years ago (ouch!), our large group meeting trainer was a guy named Elder Slaughter who had served his mission in Mexico. Rumor was that he had baptized thousands of people like some latter day Ammon or something. Read the rest of this entry »

Here is my Easter lesson for 2008. I know we have talked about the atonement here before, and if anyone can find the link feel free to post it here:
It is interesting to think about how BOM writers, who certainly had never heard of any “atonement theories,” understood this concept.
THE FALL AND ATONEMENT AS TAUGHT IN THE BOOK OF MORMON
EASTER SUNDAY 2008
Based on two lectures by Robert L. Millet.
The Atonement and the Fall are a package deal – you can’t teach one without the other in the Book of Mormon

For those who have read my paper on the four Mormon discourses, you may find interesting a series of podcasted interviews Adam Miller and I are doing at teachyediligently. So that the paper and the subsequent mathemes I have developed are accessible to those listening, I have also posted both the paper and the mathemes on my user page at the wiki: see the paper and the mathemes. If anyone has any questions also, feel free to post them here.

Go to this Feast page for an index of Sunday School lesson posts, including Jim F’s notes from 2004.
I usually go to class with a lot of notes and a general idea in mind, often something that builds on the previous weeks’ lesson. I start class with a brief reminder of what was discussed and then we go where the discussion takes us this week. Every now and then, however, I like to create “lesson vignettes”—a bunch of 5-to-10-minute mini-lessons. The goal is not to teach all of them, mind you, and I’m always happy whenever we spend the entire class on only one of them, but sometimes moving quickly through several different ideas seems to reach more class members than a lesson that focuses on a single theme. Another bonus: sometimes the class just isn’t interested in the things I am, so it’s nice to have multiple talking points just in case what I find most interesting is greeted by the chirping of crickets {smile}. Here are two vignettes for Jacob 1-4. Read the rest of this entry »

What does it mean to take the name of the Lord in vain? We could look at lots of scriptures. Here’s 3: Ex 20:7, D&C 63:60-65 & D&C 41:1. The first is the famous example–it is one of the ten commandments. The second says that we take the name of the Lord in vain when we speak as though we’re authorized by the Lord when we aren’t. The third curses the members of the Church (because we go by his name) when we don’t listen to Christ. One thing we see from these scriptures is the wide variety of things it means to “take the name of the Lord in vain.”
Which is worse: to hit your hand with a hammer and cry out ”God that hurt,” to hit your hand with a hammer and say f— or to close a prayer with the words “in the name of Jesus Christ” without any thought for Jesus? Read the rest of this entry »

Here are my notes for BOM #9. The first two pages are my own redaction of others’ thoughts (including some from on the blog - thanks Robert!) and some of my own; the bulk of the material following is comprised of the notes from Mack Stirling’s Institute class. I will be using his notes throughout the BOM study. I have often wished that they could be printed somewhere, and now with his permission I am adding them here.
